Client: Empiric Student Property PLC

Project: Emily Davies, Southampton

Date: Completed 2020

Consisting of 4 six storey blocks surrounding a central courtyard, the existing development at Emily Davies provided student accommodation for up to 240 residents. Out dated, and non-compliant with current HMO guidelines, the development offered minimal amenity for its residents, and was rated poorly on social media with the local student population.

56three were appointed to extensively refurbish the existing accommodation whilst bringing them up to current standards, and create a new build pavilion within the courtyard to provide much need amenity facilities for the residents.

56three identified further opportunities to fill the gaps between buildings in order to maximise density and combine the principal elevations to create a solid street edge.

The pavilion has been designed as a playful and fun intervention within a previously unused and uninspiring courtyard. Shrouded in monochromatic triangular cladding, with generous window openings and a green roof, the pavilion contains communal lounges, a gym, cinema, laundry and social dining space, providing a hub for the residents to work, rest and play.
