Client: Empiric Student Property

Project: St Mary’s Bristol

Date: Due to Complete 2022

The redevelopment of the former St Mary’s Hospital in Central Bristol will soon provide 160 bedrooms of prime student accommodation on a challenging site with significant constraints.

The development has been carefully designed to bring the original heritage building into sustainable use through careful internal interventions including the addition of a dynamic basement to provide an exciting arrival and amenity space for the residents, and a rooftop extension to provide mezzanine apartments with open views across the city centre.

The existing heritage building will be complimented by the addition of a dynamic extension clad in a living wall to minimise its visual impact when viewed against the green backdrop of Brandon Hill.

There are also significant new build elements to deliver maximum density on the grounds surrounding the heritage building, including a new pavilion which is located to the front of the site and a row of terraced townhouses which step up the lane to the rear of the site, providing a formal street edge and a colourful new addition to this historic area of the city.

Although a conservation led approach has been taken to the heritage building, all new elements of construction have been designed with a contemporary and sensitive aesthetic ensuring a clear distinction between new and old, showcasing the heritage building whilst creating an exciting signature development for our client.
